I am graduating this December from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  I served last year as the Breakthrough to Nursing Director for NCANS, and I look forward to using that experience into this year to accomplish great things for NC nursing students!  My main goals for this term is to act as a conduit between individual school chapters and national and global nursing leaders.  I want North Carolina’s nursing students to receive recognition for the great things they are doing, and I also want us all to be well informed about what’s happening in our profession on a state, national and global level.  I tutored for the School of Nursing after my second semester in the program and realized that I love teaching – but I also want to retain an active practice to keep my skills sharp.  My nursing passion lies in returning power to the hospitalized patient and their family.  I have an amazing kid who asks hard questions, love to chase my cats around the house, and can often be found blog surfing til 2am.  I’d love to hear about you, your school, your chapter!  Please contact me if you’d like to arrange a speaker for your chapter meeting or have a question about state or national ANS matters.  Thanks so much!  bloedau@email.unc.edu

Jackie Mieczkowski, Vice President

I attend UNC-Chapel Hill.  My goals while in office are to increase vendors, increase student participation at NCANS and continue National recognition.  I am really excited to see how this year goes and what we can accomplish!  My career goals are to become a DNP in the NICU and I am looking into administrative office in the Nursing Association.  My Mom is a nurse and she showed me a lot about her career. I watched her go to school, graduate and basically fell in love with nursing.  The idea of doing something that matters and lending a helping hand to another was what has drawn me to this career.  Outside of nursing I enjoy playing soccer, lacrosse, running, Kappa Kappa Gamma and volunteering. jmieczko@email.unc.edu

Kristin Wainwright, Secretary

I attend East Carolina University. My goals while in office include planning two successful conferences.  My career goals are to become either a Psychiatric NP or a CRNA.  I plan on getting my PhD and eventually teach nursing in NC.  I come from three generations of nurses and was inspired to go into nursing by the need I saw in my Peace Corps experience. My hobbies include useless crafts, walking my dog and gardening. kjm0711@ecu.edu

Lynn Tran, Treasurer

I am currently enrolled in the BSN program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and am originally from Hillsborough. As your NCANS Treasurer, I hope to encourage conservative and principled spending. I first found my great appreciation and pride in this state while attending the NC School of Science & Math in Durham. Through my careful overseeing of the budget, I will be able to support the endeavors of this Association and represent North Carolina student nursing leadership at state and national conventions. This position will allow me to practice ethical decision making and participate as a team member towards the initiatives of NCANS. My professional goals include graduating in May 2009 from UNC-CH and working in acute care before applying to a CRNA program. lbtran@email.unc.edu

Tiffani Broderick, Publication Director

I am a student at Gardner-Webb University.  My goal in office is to increase student’s awareness of the Hypodermic, an online newsletter, recruit more students from the GWU chapter and keep everyone up to date on future events and activities of NCANS.  My career goals are to graduate in May 2009 with my ADN degree, and then complete my BSN degree in nursing the following year.  I have chosen a nursing degree because I have a heart for others.  I watched my Mom fight breast cancer and saw how helpful and kind the nurses were to her and my family and they inspired me.  Outside of nursing I love running, hanging out with my family, soccer, shopping, and traveling. Tiff71421@aol.com

Douglas Reid, Legislative Director

I attend University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  My goals while in office include keeping the board and NCANS members informed about legislation pertaining to nurses, our profession and our patients, encouraging and helping members draft resolutions, presenting all resolutions to the board and at national conventions, and assist the board in any way possible.  After graduation I would like to work in pediatrics.  After gaining some experience I would like to continue my education.  I decided to enter nursing because I want a career in which I could serve my community, help others, provide a degree of financial security, and allows for advancement.  Also, when compared with a suit and tie, scrubs are pretty comfortable! I am interested in a wide variety of topics and activities.  I love the sports (Go Heels!), the outdoors, politics and debate, computers and music.  When I’m not in school I love to spend time with my family, especially my new niece. dsreid@email.unc.edu

Scott Goodsite, Breakthrough to Nursing

I attend Wake Tech Community College.  My goals in office include getting more colleges in N.C.  involved with, and participate in NCANS events. I also plan to develop programs to increase interest in entering the Nursing profession. These programs will include, attracting underrepresented groups such as, men and minorities, and outreach programs to educate high school and middle school children about opportunities in Nursing.  My career goals include continuing my education to become a Nurse Practioner, and work as a travel Nurse to provide care in areas of the country that have a shortage of qualified healthcare providers.  I went into nursing to make a difference in areas with a shortage of healthcare workers and to be a role model for other men that want to enter the Nursing profession.  In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my fiancé, cooking, traveling, playing golf, and watching the N.Y. Giants and UNC Tarheels. I volunteer with the Jimmy V Cancer Foundation and St. Baldrick’s Youth Cancer Foundation. sdgoodsite@my.waketech.edu

Bethany French, District I Director

I attend Gardner-Webb University.  While in office I want to effectively promote NCANS throughout District I, and encourage more involvement from my own college’s chapter and other chapters in District I. I want to ensure that the GWU School of Nursing and all other SON in my district are informed and become involved in all that NCANS has to offer.  I plan to graduate this year with my ADN degree, and then complete my BSN degree in nursing the following year. I want to take advantage of all the opportunities my nursing career has to offer and specialize in my passion area of nursing or possibly become an NP. I also plan to take part in medical missions throughout my nursing career.  I went into nursing because I have a fascination for the intricate inter-workings of the human body.  My first anatomy and physiology class just made me even more interested in becoming a nurse. I was also attracted to nursing because it is a helping profession. Having the knowledge to provide competent care to patients in need and being able to share some warmth and comfort with them during their stay in the hospital is such a gratifying experience. Having those opportunities is one of the reasons why I love nursing.  Besides nursing I love drawing, painting, taking pictures, kickboxing, listening to music and being creative.

Donna Kevitt, District II Director

I attend Catawba Valley Community College and expect to graduate in May 2009.  While in office, my goals are to establish contact with local chapters, start new chapters, and promote my passion of community service. There are so many fun and exciting ways to be involved in your community!! I look forward to serving as District II Director. My career goals include working in the ICU or ER & to further my education and obtain my MSN.  My personal interests include traveling and photography. donna@kevitt.com

Felice Carlton, District III Director

I am currently a senior in nursing school at UNC-Chapel Hill.  One of my main goals while in office includes trying to reach out to schools that have typically been underrepresented in NCANS in the past.  I also hope this will help us to gain a broader perspective from nursing students at the state-level.  My future career goals are focused around providing care, and education, to patients living in areas that are considered to be medically underserved.  I am very interested in health promotion, disease prevention, and working in primary care.  In the future I plan to further my education by obtaining an advanced degree that will allow me to provide care in a family medicine setting.  I chose to pursue a degree in nursing because I have always been interested health care.  I love the flexibility of the nursing profession, and I also love how this profession allows opportunity for one to advance themselves in health care.  My personal hobbies include spending time with my friends and family, traveling, shopping, and exercising.fcarlton@email.unc.edu

Ann R. Hoskins, District IV Director

As the District IV Director,  I plan to encourage more participation in the local and state level student nursing associations.  We all get so excited and so focused on what we do daily and weekly in nursing school and miss out on the opportunities that professional nursing associations provide, like seminars, professional contacts and networking, and the support you get from other people in your field who understand the challenges that you face each day. I am a second-level nursing student at Johnston Community College. When I graduate in May, I hope to work in an Oncology or Cardiac Care unit.  I am considering continuing my education later on so that I can become an instructor in a nursing program.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have. annie@twelve34.com

Michael Bury, District V Director

I am a student at Coastal Carolina Community College.  My goals while in office are to get new members and schools to participate in NCANS and attend the conferences.  I also want to help other students and myself develop more networking opportunities.  My career goals are to obtain my degree, work on a medical-surgical unit and then continue my education and obtain my MSN.  I went into nursing because I want to help people in every way that I can. My interests and hobbies include all kinds of sports, surfing, watching the office and ER on Thursday nights.  I am really looking forward to working with everyone and please free to contact me with any questions and concerns. michaelbury072@cc.coastalcarolina.edu
